Operating a SharkRF Openspot over a MESH Network:
Today Darryl, K5DLQ, and I connect our MESH nodes together over an internet tunnel (this simulates a true over-the-air MESH network connection that isn’t possible due to the distance that Darryl and I are from each other) and connect our SharkRF Openspot devices together, then perform a short QSO.

The SharkRF Openspot has been one of the most popular DV hotspots, allowing connection into the DMR, DSTAR and YSF networks. Today Darryl and I setup the SharkRF Server/Client option in the Openspot menu, then we use our DMR radios to communicate through each of our Openspot units (his being a server, and mine being a client which connects to his IP on the MESH network).

This can be a great tool for using MESH networking to allow connection of non-MESH devices onto the network.

I am mostly interested whether it will be possible to use the device as a full duplex DMR repeater even if only on local.

More then 20mW RF would also be terrific.

I am also curious if it is a small repeater or just another DV4mini. I do not need more than 20mW (actually, I think I will set it up on one of the european LPD 70cm channels and those are limited to 10mW).

According to Norbert on the SharkRF team, "It will be available sometime later this year. We don't know any time frame yet".

Sorry to be impatient, but it has been nearly 3 months since the last update on an internal WiFi version of the Open Spot. I will definitely buy the WiFi version as soon as it is available!! Can you please give us an update. THANKS.

It just works. Period.

I've got a DVMega, DV4mini, DV4home, and now the OpenSPOT.
Out of all 4 devices, the OpenSPOT is the most stable and just works all the time.
The DVMega is good, but lately the Raspberry Pi seems to lose connection with the DVMega board modem forcing me to shut it down and power-cycle it.
The DV4mini...well, I think we all know the horror stories with that one.
The DV4home is also an unmitigated disaster. Google "dv4home review" for more info on that one.

But SharkRF has come up with a simple, small device that just plain works and I've been running it non-stop for over a week now with no issues.

A quick look at my mobile SharkRF Openspot setup which includes the use of a TP-LINK TL-WR802N router. The router connects to the internet wirelessly via my 4G mobile phone hotspot. The Openspot can be configured using my tablet which is also connected to the same mobile hotspot.

The devices can all be powered either by a mobile battery pack or through my car's cigar lighter. I use an FTM 100 in the car with a Bluetooth headset to connect via RF to the Openspot.

The Openspot can be configured to connect to FCS or YSF reflectors as well as having the ability to link C4FM through to DMR.

For C4FM users I recommend you try connecting to FCS001/55 which (at the time of publishing) is linked through to the CQ-UK WIRES-X room.


Review SharkRF openSPOT

Hotspots were not developed to replace repeaters, but rather to supplement them. In areas where there is No repeater, a hotspot allows the user to connect directly to a digital network via the internet. In areas of Heavy repeater use, a hotspot allows the user to access the network without competing for an available time slot.

If your local repeater gives you access to a network such as DMR-MARC, an openSPOT can give access to networks such as Brandmeister. You will now have access to the best of both worlds.
Summary

DMR repeaters are being placed in service daily, but currently there are only around 800 repeaters in the US. As for me, I am 25 miles away from my two nearest repeaters and require an outside antenna to reliably use them (and I’m one of the lucky ones). In some areas of the country, digital repeaters don’t exist.

The solution quickly became obvious. To enjoy the freedom of a handheld, I needed the help of a hotspot. After listening to several configurations over the past several months, I am convinced daily that I definitely made the right decision with an openSPOT, with everything I need condensed into one small package.

We have used a hotspot on our repeaters and found putting it in the repeater case worked for us.
Our repeaters are based around the Yaesu DR-1X.
We have planes to use the cross mode capability of the openSPOT in the future.
