Why Hotspot

Why a hotspot ???
I don't know anything about these or why I would want one though.

ANSWER ::I understand as I did receive a few emails with questions regarding the unit. In a previous article (the DV4mini review) I did explained in the introduction the purposed of a digital hotspot. Maybe I should have used is again. You can find the complete article on my personal website in the publication page. Below you will find part the introduction text of this review. Hope this help.

This daemon can be used to create your own private radio network using SharkRF devices like openSPOT, or your own custom software/hardware, as the SharkRF IP Connector Protocol is open source.

Simply it's like a TAC310 off of the DMR network. A standalone talkgroup.

All connected and logged in clients receive the data you send to the server.

Here is a script to auto install the srf-ip-conn-srv. This allows you to run a server that your sharkrf can connect to. The below instructions are for debian based linux distros.

The below link will take you there if you need a good place to start. This tutorial is written as part two, picking up directly where part one left off.

SharkRF on DMR setup

The Openspot first with the supplied network cable (it can also be used another) to connect to the Internet router. Then connect the power supply to the openspot and then plug the power supply into the socket. The Openspot now starts.

After 1 minute, the Openspot is ready for operation.

Since no screen can be connected to the Openspot, all settings are set via the Internet browser. To do this, go to http://192.168.1.128/openspot.html_gz#login. The digits 192.168.1.128 are to be replaced by the IP address, which the Openspot has in its own network.



The password is entered after the call. The default password is: openspot



Click on "Connectors" at the top of the blue bar.



Click on "Advanced mode" in the blue bar.

Now select "Homebrew / MMDVM" under Connectors and click on the blue field "Switch to selected". The question, which appears please answer with "CHANGE MODEM MODE".

With SharkRF openSPOT you do not need a computer or Rasperry PI. Everything is already integrated in the blue box so that DMR(digital mobile radio) = Brandmeister / DMRplus / DMR-MARC or FUSION or DStar operation can be started immediately after the one-time necessary settings (capturing the own DMR ID, etc.).

The openSPOT requires the following hardware for operation: 
• openSPOT 
• Internet connection via Ethernet cable (no WLAN!)

The openSPOT works with a simplex frequency, which you can choose by yourself. It is available as a 70 cm version.

A few years ago, I picked up some used MOTOTRBO gear to use on our local DMR repeater system (MOTOTRBO is Motorola’s version of DMR). Here in Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Ham Radio group has been instrumental in establishing a great network of DMR repeaters, a real asset for Colorado radio amateurs. See Rocky Mountain Ham Radio TRBO/DMR Network.  Worldwide, the DMR-MARC organization has created a robust network of MOTOTRBO repeaters in over 60 countries.
A more recent development is the establishment of the BrandMeister Network, which promotes more of a homebrew approach to DMR. This evening, the BrandMeister dashboard shows 634 industrial repeaters (commercial equipment), 263 homebrew repeaters and over 1300 hotspots of various types.  A variety of DMR hotspots are available, including the DV4mini. I’m not going try to list all of the hotspots available as I’m sure I’ll miss something.  The SharkRF openSPOT caught my attention because of this excellent review by John ‘Miklor’ K3NXU. Because of its popularity, the openSPOT is on backorder (price: 182.5 Euro).

OK, so what is a hotspot?

A hotspot an interface that allows you to connect to a digital network directly without the need of an actual repeater. There are several variations of hotspots available. Some may require your PC or Raspberry Pi interface, but the SharkRF openSPOT is a small stand alone IP gateway that connects directly to your internet router via the Ethernet connection. No other equipment required.

The openSPOT was developed by two hams that not only understand what hams want, need, and enjoy, but know how to make it work with minimal setup. With features not found in other hotspots, the bottom line is, they did it right.

Can the Openspot be used to place a private call between two Openspot users? I have tried with no success so if it can be done, please explain. I have tried in local mode and when connected to a talkgroup that both stations were linked to.

Basic openSPOT setup


You need to set up a simplex channel in your radio with same RX and TX frequencies. You need to set the channel's TX contact to the talkgroup ID you want to talk to.

You'll need to create an RX group list also, put TG9 in the list, and assign that list to your simplex channel. openSPOT transmits voice announcements on TG9, so this way you'll be able to hear them.
